Epiphany or Timket
The festival of Timket (Epiphany) commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist in the river Jordan. In 2018, Epiphany was on January 6th according to the Gregorian calendar while Timket was on 11th day of the month of Ter, according to the Ethiopian calendar.
The eve of Timket is known as ketera which means to ‘build a dam’. In the afternoon of the ceremony, the priest takes the tabots (a model of the ‘Ark of the Covenant’ present in the Ethiopian altar) from several churches and carries them to the water to be blessed.
