Axum (Amharic: አክሱም, Tigrinya: ኣኽሱም) is located about 900 km from Addis Ababa and 200 km from Lalibela. Since 1980, this ancient city has been a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are flights to Axum from Addis, Lalibela and Gondar, but not on all days.
Until the 7th century, the Kingdom of Axum was the most powerful state in the area. Between the 1st and the 13th century, the capital of the Kingdom (also called Axum) had a distinctive architecture, with giant obelisks, in addition to royal tombs and castles.
